I experienced firsthand the frustration of watching my autistic son, London, struggle during his elementary school years. It broke my heart that he would go to school and be misunderstood by his peers. I started thinking about how to help London's classmates, his classmates' parents, and his teachers better understand his unique needs. While many of London's behaviors could have been easily explained by sharing that he had autism, school staff were not able to openly discuss his diagnosis with other students or parents. This often led to misunderstandings and made it difficult for others to understand the reasons behind some of his challenges.

Writing a medical book for children became a way to communicate London's special needs to school-age children in a positive and understandable manner. London had progressed past elementary school, but it was on my heart to provide a creative solution to help many who followed him. One of the most rewarding moments was being able to share his book at the elementary school he attended by reading the book to the entire student body.

Since then, I have connected with multitudes of parents who face similar challenges when trying to explain their child's medical diagnosis or developmental differences to those in their school community. Their stories motivated me to continue to write stories to help bridge the misconception gap in a creative way. My hope is that these books help foster understanding, acceptance, and compassion for children whose differences may not always be visible.

That's why I write. These books are a bridge between the medical world and the imagination of a child — built with clinical accuracy, wrapped in warmth, and designed to make health feel like a new learning adventure.
